Evaluation of the Spring 2012 CCB Conference and Convention

The organizers of the Spring 2012 CCB conference and convention would very much like to express their appreciation to those who answered the evaluation questionnaire.
We received extensive and useful information which will assist in guiding the organizers when putting on future conference and conventions.
It has been brought to our attention that there were many individuals who participated in the conference and convention via the streamed general sessions and CAT CCCLV breakout session. These individuals would like to provide feedback on the presentations and were wondering even if the deadline has passed, could they do so.
The organizers would like to receive input from these individuals and anyone else who might want to comment on the presentations during the Spring 2012 conference and convention.
Please provide any comments about the presentations on or before Friday May 18th, 2012. Email comments are to be sent to Eugene.lozano@ccbnet.org
or calling the CCB office at 1-800-221-6359.

From CCB President, Donna Pomerantz

Happy Friday to all Members and Friends in the CCB Family!
First I'd like to wish each and everyone out there a Happy Mother's Day! I will be spending the day with my wonderful mother who I am blessed to have in my life! Hopefully she will let us spoil her just a little bit on Sunday.

Now onto the business at hand. Below this message you will find the Meeting Agenda of the Blind Advisory Committee. Several of us are serving on behalf of our CCB. However I would ask that you read the meeting agenda and take note of the call in number and code. If you can not attend the meeting in person, I would urge you to call in and participate via the conference line. The quality of services for people in California who are blind or visually impaired depend on each of you out there to remain active and let those who are decision makers know you care about the quality of services for our community! CCB: Endless Possibilities, Endless Opportunities!

What a great Spring Conference and Convention we had! There was such diverse programming from technology workshops, we held two more beyond the regular Technology Committee slot which had good attendance.
We had an interactive Rehabilitation Committee Session where they talked about the VR Modernization Program and other things related to the Department.
We had discussion on the Junior Blind of America's Youth Transition Program as well as hearing from the Hatlain Center on their program which gives real life experience of personal responsibility to their students, and we even heard a little bit from Dr. Stuart Wittenstein, Superintendent, California School for the Blind, and so much more.
We had a quality Presidents' Dinner where a lively discussion of mentoring and recruiting was facilitated by me, and Frank Welte of our San Francisco and Contra Costa Chapters inspired us all into action.
Caltrans attended our Conference and Convention and set up a demonstration of alternate path of travel options and took our feedback.
Our banquet was marvelous! From the beginning with the Supertonic acapela group from Santa Clara University (thank you Ed) to our awards, and the stories Marlaina Lieberg shared with us, she was our ACB representative.
We had the kick off of the new CCB Streaming Team onsite that had Louis Herrera, Stephanie Rood, John Glass and Rob Turner was on stand by in the audience if needed to pinch hit. We also had Ken Metz and Andrea Pitzenbarger at home listening in and assisting with the monitoring of the sound quality.
The announcement of a volunteer Social Security Task Force that will work on a case by case basis with CCB Members is newly formed.
There was a lot of joy and laughter that surrounded us at convention. A huge thanks to everyone who helped to the heavy lifting, you know who you are, smile. A huge thank you.
So now onto the Fall Conference and Convention. Here is the information you all have been waiting for. Visit our website at http://www.ccbnet.org/conventions/upcomingConvene.htm

From Jeff Thom Regarding AB2485

Great news from the Capitol. With the help of some business groups, we were able to defeat AB2485, which would have permitted the California Department of Transportation to enter into agreements with private companies to put retail establishments at roadside rest areas along federal highways, thus depriving blind vendors of vending machine operations at these locations. Thanks to the many vendors who came to the Assembly Transportation Committee hearing and especially to Roy Harmon for his outstanding testimony.

Brian Day Presentation At the Spring 2012 Conference and Convention

At the conference and convention we heard a presentation from Brian Day regarding the universe, sounds it makes, and the way planets and debris interact.
During his presentation Brian played the sounds the aurora lights, collapsed stars and planets moving all make.
In 2013 NASA is launching a probe to study the moon’s atmosphere. Amateur radio operators can help by tuning in and listening to the sounds particles make as they are colliding with earth’s atmosphere.

From Jeff Thom Regarding AB2485

We urgently need your phone calls and emails to oppose AB2485. This bill, which is being heard by the Assembly Transportation Committee on the afternoon of Monday April 23, would allow the California Department of Transportation to enter into agreement with private businesses for the operation of retail establishments at roadside rest areas along federal highways. Not only will this bill jeopardize current and potential operations of blind vendors who have, or can be allowed to have, vending machines at these rest areas, but the bill will also mean that other small businesses that operate near these rest stops will be put out of business by the big boys with whom the department can contract.
The committee roster is below. Please call the chair or any of the members, especially if one of them is your legislator. You can also email them by using their first name, followed by a period, then their last name, followed by asm.ca.gov. For example, the chair’s email would be bonnie.lowenthal@asm.ca.gov
Thank you for your work on this matter.

Union City BART station Bus Stop Announcements

The CCB office has received the following information from the Alameda Contra Costa Transit regarding issues with stop announcements to be made on busses service the Union City BART station.
The problem will exist during the Spring 2012 sign up and is hoped to be corrected during the next sign up of operators.
Because there are changes to the stops at Union City BART that have not been incorporated into the Spring 2012 data, there will be some incorrect annunciation.
Announcements on the following routes/directions will be impacted:
Rte 99 NB is programmed to enter the station via Union Square and stop on the same side of the roadway as the station entrance; consequently it will make the announcement, “Approaching Union City BART station” after it leaves the station.
Rte 333 NB is also programmed to enter the station via Union Square and stop on the same side of the roadway as the station entrance; consequently it will not make its final announcement, “Approaching Union City BART station, End of Line”
Operators should be reminded that they will need to call out stops as they approach Union City BART to ensure that passengers with visual impairments receive correct information. They also may need to assist such passengers with enough information to be oriented when they get off the coach (i.e. where the coach has stopped in relation to the station entrance.)
The following routes/directions also have conflicts between the data and the actual placement of bus stops, but annunciation is not affected either because the announcement is programmed early enough to catch the route in either direction, or because Union City BART is the beginning of line (and so not announced):
    216 NB & SB
    264 NB & SB
    345 NB

Escalator Closure at the Hallidie Plaza Entrance to Powell Street Station

Please be advised that the escalators serving the Hallidie Plaza entrance to Powell Street Station will be closed for repairs, starting March 19, 2012.
The SFMTA will renovate the two escalators at the northeast corner of Hallidie Plaza leading up to the cable car turnaround at Powell & Market streets. We will begin work on the down escalator from Market Street to the Mezzanine level. This escalator will be closed for approximately three months. Once the work is completed, the escalator in the up direction from the Mezzanine level to Market Street will be worked on for three months. Reconstructing the two escalators will take approximately six months in total.
During the construction period, one of the escalators will be in operation in the up direction. However, during the first four days of construction starting March 19th, both escalators will have to be shut down while an enclosed barricade structure is built to provide safety for pedestrians and construction crews. Customers can use the stairs or the station elevator for access between the plaza and street level.
Construction hours will be from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; however some weekend work may be required.
Phase One of the Metro Station Escalator Rehabilitation Project includes renovating the escalators at Church Street Station, at Hallidie Plaza of Powell Street Station and at Van Ness Station. Work at Church Street Station started in January and is expected to be completed in late March. Escalator work at Van Ness Station is slated to start in August lasting approximately for six months.
Thank you for your support and patience as we work to improve your Muni system.

When reservations are made, attendees will be required to pay a deposit equal to the room rate for the first night for each reservation. A deposit is refundable to the attendee if the hotel receives notice of a cancellation at least 72 hours prior to scheduled arrival. Upon check-in, each attendee will be required to present a valid credit card, on which an amount of sufficient pre-authorization can be obtained to cover the room for the length of the guest's stay, plus the anticipated use of the hotel's ancillary services.

    From Donna Pomerantz, CCB President

    Conference and Convention Update
Please make your room reservations as soon as you can. The hotel is ready, willing and able to take them for the great price of $100 tax inclusive.
There are so many great things in store for us at the CCB Conference and Convention. Your announcement and preregistration forms will be in your hands very soon. Also, please check the ccb listservs and your email box for the announcement as well. The Board of directors has given the go in getting them out via these above means so that things can begin to get accessed and each of you can read about all the great things this convention will have to offer. If you wish to receive an email copy of the announcement and preregistration please contact Ed in the ccb office, or contact one of your Board members as each of us now has a copy of the announcement and prereg too.
We are looking forward to seeing each of you at our Spring Convention!
Take care and have a great weekend!

The New Moon - CCB conference and convention Presentation

Those of you who are aspiring citizen scientists and/or amateur radio enthusiasts will be interested in learning of a presentation to be given on Friday evening, April 13th, 2012 during the California Council of the Blind conference and convention. Please disseminate this information to anyone you know who is interested in space exploration and wants to be involved.
"The New Moon” Brian Day, Citizen Science Lead and Education/Public Outreach (E/PO) Specialist, NASA Lunar Science Institute, Moffett Field, California.
A new generation of robotic lunar explorers is completely changing our understanding of the Moon. The concept of the Moon as a completely arid, airless, static world is being replaced with the understanding that the Moon has a complex, intricate environment with active geology, significant deposits of water ice, and a dynamic (though thin) atmosphere.
Citizen scientists can play key roles in supporting the science of these missions. We will discuss how visually-impaired observers, especially those involved in amateur radio, can directly participate in NASA lunar exploration.

From Donna Pomerantz, CCB President: Spring Conference and Convention Update and CCB Nuts and Bolts for the Chapter and Statewide Affiliate Toolbox

A brief note regarding some CCB related nuts and bolts for our chapters.
I wish to send out a very warm "thank you" to everyone who has sent in their membership dues and rosters by the deadline of March 1st. All of you who have done so are doing your part to make the load manageable allowing us the time needed to get our information into the ACB Office. Thanks to the Membership Committee for assisting us with the "gentle reminders" as well. To you who helped with that, you know who you are and many, many thanks for being that voice on the phone reaching out to everyone as well as sending follow up emails! Credentials are due into the office by March 12 so you may be seated at our Spring Conference and Convention which will allow your chapter representative to participate in Nominating Committee proceedings and more. the information has been posted to the Presidents' email listserv.
If you are in need of another format so your chapter can complete this task, please feel free to contact Ed in the CCB Office. Also, be sure to ask your chapter Presidents about the Spring Sweepstakes tickets ($2 per ticket). Everyone has them now and all proceeds go toward funding the printing of the Blind Californian! First prize is $500! There are some fun surprises in store for those of you who wish to attend the CCB Banquet this Spring. Stay tuned to read more about some of those in future Connections!
It is my hope that Committees and Statewide Affiliates will be sharing their information here as well as on the lists.
Guess who is coming to California? None other than Marlaina Lieberg! Many of you know her as the very "lively" Secretary of the American Council of the Blind! Among the many things she may be known for, she does a "wonderful" roll call at the ACB Conference and Convention, she is the voice behind the "Coast To Coast" ACB Radio show, and so much more! Well, we hope you will sign up to attend our Conference and Convention where we will be sure to have a great time while learning the most up to date information on the goings on in ACB!
Stay tuned for weekly updates as we near the Conference and Convention.

The New Moon - CCB conference and convention Presentation

From Gene Lozano, CCB First Vice President & Chair, Committee on Access and Transportation:
Those of you who are aspiring citizen scientists and/or amateur radio enthusiasts will be interested in learning of a presentation to be given on Friday evening, April 13th, 2012 during the California Council of the Blind conference and convention.
Please disseminate this information to anyone you know who is interested in space exploration and wants to be involved.

"The New Moon" Brian Day, Citizen Science Lead and Education/Public Outreach (E/PO) Specialist, NASA Lunar Science Institute, Moffett Field, California.

    Private Eyes

Private Eyes by Stephen Dietz, Directed by Greg Shane, March 10th - April 8th.
    Phone: 310-902-8220 cre@creoutreach.org
Theatre by the Blind puts its own, unique spin on the Steven Dietz’s multilayered, comedy of suspicion. Presented by an entirely blind cast, Greg Shane directs Private Eyes, a relationship thriller about love, lust and the power of deception.
Matthew's wife, Lisa, is having an affair with Adrian, a theatre director. Or perhaps the affair is part of the play being rehearsed. Or has Matthew imagined all of it simply to have something to report to his therapist Frank? The audience itself plays the role of detective in this relationship thriller where art imitates life. Or does it?

    From Donna Pomerantz, CCB President

Another week has passed us by and I didn't get to go enjoy the festivities where the little groundhog was the center of attention. Oh well, maybe some day I'll be able to go.
Now, onto the business at hand. Very soon your Chapter Presidents will be receiving the CCB Spring Sweepstakes tickets in the mail. A huge thank you to those members who have given and are giving donations so we can have a nice cash prize! We'll announce, very soon, more of the specifics about the "Spring Sweeps" as John fondly refers to them.
Whatever you can do to support the "CCB Spring Sweeps" would be very much appreciated by all. Stay connected to the connection for more news on the Spring conference and Convention, and other Council happenings! Thank you and be well.

Happy Friday everyone, or happy weekend depending on when you read this. I hope everyone is doing well.
First to begin on a personal note, it has been a good week for us in the Pomerantz house as Mitch has finally been separated from his pic line, YAY! This journey for us is still moving forward, but for us, this was another milestone! As always, thank you to all of you for your support during these past months, it seems like forever to me.
Now onto the business at hand. To all of our chapters and statewide affiliates, please do whatever you can to assist your groups in getting their chapter/affiliate rosters and dues ready for the current year. To our Presidents and Leadership, please be on the watch for the proper forms within the next week. Remember, you will receive credentials and dues/roster reminders and I'm sure most of you are already working on them. I also wish to thank those of you who helped us by filling out the event forms and applications in preparation for the Spring. It is a living breathing from that is ever evolving and we'll come to you in future months to receive feedback as to what was positive and what may need a little improvement.

Do you have an old CCTV in good working condition that you are no longer using? What about the magnifiers that are just sitting in your drawer that you haven't used in years? Do you have a computer with magnification or speech software in good working condition that you need to find a home for?
Well, I've got the perfect solution. At the state hospitals such as Patton where I work, there are people in need of this equipment on a supervised basis. The computers will not be hooked up to any Internet service, so we don't need the modems. Through our Volunteer Services department, you can receive a donation receipt for your taxes.
If interested, please leave your information via phone at (909) 425-6315 or email me at: christy.crespin@psh.dmh.ca.gov and I will follow up. Thank you.

    Vanda Pharmaceuticals Clinical Study Recruitment

    Dear CCB Members.
Over the past year, Vanda Pharmaceuticals has made steady progress in recruiting participants for their clinical study, but they still have work to do and need our help.
The deadline to enroll patients is forthcoming and they need our help to reach their recruitment goal as soon as possible. I remind you that without enough patients in their study, they cannot develop a treatment for this severe sleep disorder that afflicts so many people.
Please help spread the word about this very important research. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated.
More information on N24HSWD is available at www.24sleepwake.com
As a reminder, Vanda has set up a registry and a survey that are available by phone and on the web. Below is the announcement for their study with contact information and eligibility criteria.
    Thank you for your help.
    Sincerely,
    Gene Lozano

    Clinical Research Study Announcement

Do you ever feel like your sleep patterns are different than the rest of the world? Do you sometimes feel the unwanted urge or need to fall asleep during the day time when you need to be awake? Do you also find that you feel just too wide awake to fall or stay asleep during the night time? If you are blind, this could be due to a real sleep problem related to the lack of light needed to keep your body's internal clock in sync with the day and night cycle.
If you or someone you know might be affected, please call 1-888-389-7033 or email info@non24registry.com to learn about an ongoing clinical research study that is evaluating a new investigational treatment for this type of sleep problem. When calling, you can also complete a short sleep survey. For each completed survey, $25 will be donated to CCB.
You may be eligible to participate in the clinical trial if you are between 18 and 75 years of age and are totally blind.
Volunteers will be compensated for their participation in the clinical study and will receive study related medication, medical evaluations, and transportation at no cost.
