Guide Dogs for the Blind
Some partnerships are just meant to be.

In business, you either compete on the sighted world's terms or you don't get to play the game. Having a Guide Dog can help you do just that. Being able to travel with safety and confidence- to be known for your abilities, not your disability- can make all the difference in the world. Guide Dogs can help you find the ideal partner. And when it's right, it's a relationship everyone can
learn from.

Graphic: "Guide Dogs of the Desert International Providing independent mobility for the blind since 1972"

Guide Dogs of the Desert International (GDDI) was founded in 1972, in the California desert. With our own breeding program, we produce about 75 puppies per year that are either Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers and their crosses, or standard poodles.

At 16 - 24 months of age the puppies return to the school for formal guide dog training. Following a thorough medical evaluation, the dogs begin six months of formal training. Meanwhile, prospective students undergo a thorough assessment to determine their exact needs and the demands that will be placed on the guide dog. Each dog is hand-selected for the specific student with which it will be teamed. Each dog is then finish-trained for two weeks prior to the student arriving for class at the school.

Taking the Time to to change lives.

The training involves an intensive 28 - day program where every team lives and works together at the GDDI campus. They are taught to work safely through structured activities on the streets of various communities including Palm Springs, Banning, Redlands, Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix. GDDI is one of the only schools in the country to include air and hotel travel during training. The program's objective is to expose each team to every possible situation or environment that they might encounter once they return to their home community.

GDDI has a strong reputation for taking the time to create a family-oriented environment that is appreciated by our students. In addition, GDDI works with visually impaired students that need special attention for other disabilities they might have.

The blind receive all services free of charge. Everything GDDI achieves is made possible by the generosity of friends in the private sector. Since its inception the school has graduated over 1,000 teams. GDDI is a 50l (c)(3) non-profit corporation - Federal Tax ID # 23-7296531.

DESCRIPTION OF THE LONG BEACH MARRIOT

GENERAL OVERVIEW

The hotel consists of 8 floors, 311 rooms, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool with exercise room, a Starbucks Coffee counter, 2 main restaurants and a sports bar. The hotel's has 3 front entrances that face north, toward the front parking lot, located along Spring St. The main entrance is a set of automatic double doors, which leads to the lobby area and is called the Lobby Entrance. The east entrance is a set of double doors that open out, which leads to Corrigan's Sports Bar and is called the Lounge Entrance. The west entrance is also a set of double doors that open out, which leads to the Ballroom and conference rooms, and is called the Ballroom Entrance. The first floor is laid out with the main entrance set centrally. The east wing ends at Corrigan's Sports Bar and the west wing ends at the conference room area. An additional wing breaks off in a diagonal south/west direction, from the lobby area, ending at the Café Terrace Restaurant.

MAIN ENTRANCE TO LOBBY AREA

Approaching the main entrance from outside, there is stone tile on the ground, two park benches on each side of the entrance to sit, and a carpet runner up to the double glass automatic doors to welcome you into the square shaped lobby. After walking about 12 feet from the entrance doors, a bellman stands behind a podium straight to your left. The carpeted sitting area for the Lobby is a straight shot from the main entrance, which you are facing when you enter, with a few steps down. To locate the check-in counter, you turn right (west) after entering the main entrance and it is facing the back or south end of the Lobby. The Guest Service desk is located across from check in, facing east. There are 3 elevators that are located behind the Guest Service desk on the west side of the Lobby. On the east side of the lobby you will find the Starbucks Coffee counter; the line will start at the bottom of a carpeted ramp. Across from the line for Starbucks are the restrooms. Entering from the main entrance, the restrooms are to your left (east) with the doors facing to the back of the Lobby (south). The restrooms are labeled with a stencil like appearance; women's is right (east) of the men's.

MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE EAST WING

Entering at the main entrance, and heading left down towards the east wing, you will pass the bellman, the restrooms, and the line for Starbucks. After passing the ramp/line for Starbucks, there is a set of recessed double doors on your right (south side), that lead to the pool area. Within that recessed entry way is also a restroom door, on the east wall, that is handicap accessible and needs hotel assistance to open. The pool area contains a large indoor pool, exercise room with stationary bikes, locker rooms, a sauna, a whirlpool Jacuzzi, and also access to the outdoor pool. Across from the doors leading to the pool area are two pay phones on the left side or north side of the wing. As you continue down the east wing, towards the end, a small ATM machine is standing to your right against the south wall. You will then come to find that you are very near to the entrance door to Corrigan's Sports Bar; just turn left at the end of the short wing and the entrance will be the only door on your right (east wall). Corrigan's has it's own entrance from the front of the hotel and is called the Lounge Entrance, which is located at the end of the east wing.

ENTRANCE TO THE WEST WING

The west wing is a much longer hallway leading to the conference rooms. As you enter the hotel at the main lobby turn right and travel pass the check-in counter towards a carpeted hallway. After traveling over a small tile break on the ground, and meeting up with the carpet again a seating area with a couch, two chairs and a coffee table are placed against the north wall to your right. You will then find two more pay phones, on your left (south) after crossing over the second tile break and meeting up with the carpet. As you continue west down the wing, you will approach the third tile break. On your right are the restrooms that are separated by a drinking fountain; women's is first, just right of the drinking fountain. If you turn left at the third tile break (heading south), you will find the Lindbergh rooms. Lindbergh 2 is the first set of doors on your left followed by the doors to Lindbergh 1. Continuing down the west wing, on your right (north side), will first be the entrance to the Earhart room, then the Post room. On your left, across the way is the entrance to Salon A & B. Next door to A & B is Salon C & D, where the Grand Ballroom is. The registration tables along with volunteer tables will be right outside the ballroom and face the short pathway to outdoor access to the front of the hotel. The west wing ends with the Daugtery room on your right followed by the Rickenbacker room. Across from the Rickenbacker room are Salons E & F.

MAIN ENTRANCE TO DIAGNOL S/W WING

The diagonal wing of the hotel runs southwest and starts after passing the elevators. While traveling down the wing, the Gift Shop is first on your right with doors leading to the outside pool across from it on your left. As you continue, you will approach a carpeted area and find Phil's Angus Grille on your right; the cashier stand for the restaurant sits outside of the entrance. The southwest wing ends soon after, when you hear a cue from a running water fall that sits in the open entrance to Café Terrace. Café Terrace has a large indoor and outdoor seating area with choices from the menu or the buffet, which is located to your right as you enter.

ADDITIONAL MEETING ROOMS

Room 320 is found on the third floor. After exiting the elevator area, turn left down the narrow hallway, which will turn you right at the bend. Room 320 is on the left and about 20 feet down. At the end of the hallway is outdoor access for fresh air or a smoke.

Room 620 is found on the sixth floor and is mapped the same as 320.

Room 838 is on the eighth floor. After exiting the elevator area, turn left (south) and follow the hallway as it bends right (west). Room 838 will be on your right hand side, after passing the humming of the soda and ice machine.

GUIDE DOG RELIEF AREA

From the West Wing:
Access to the guide dog relief area is a set of double doors (called the Foyer Entrance), at the end of the west wing, next door to the Rickenbaker room. As you exit, the guide dog run is to your left but divided by a line of bushes. You need walk around by following the sidewalk (about 30 feet) until you find an access ramp to your left, at the end of a row of possible parked cars. You will then be stepping into the parking lot, and following the parked cars around to look for the walkway on the other side. A good sized grass area is split down the middle by the walk way and borders Lakewood Blvd. On the grass area, to the right of the walk way is a metal post with box at the top containing a supply of refuse bags and a cylindrical waste container just below it.

Note: There is a sign on the post stating that this is a Dog Relief area and instructs patrons to use the refuse bags and waste container for disposing of their dog's waste.

From the Lobby/Main Entrance:
As you exit the main entrance, turn left (west) and follow the sidewalk to the end of the parking lot. Again, you will need to step into the parking lot and follow the possible line of parked cars to your left to find the side walk across the way.

Fire Exits:
For your personal safety, please note where each exit is located upon arrival. All floors/rooms are equipped with diagrams/locations of various fire exits, which are located at the end of each hallway. The two stairways are located on the East and West wings of the hotel. Both stairways exit outside the buildings on the main grounds. There are three (3) fire extinguishers located on each wing of the building (a total of 6 per floor) which are in bubble-type plastic covers/cabinets. All cabinets are located on the north-side of the hallways. There are three (3) fire alarm manual pull stations, which are red in color, with the center point of the device mounted 48 inches above the finished floor; one (1) at each end of the floor by the exit door and one (1) on the center near the elevator lobby.

Our Banquet rooms are located on the main level floor. The fire exits are located at each door of the foyer, as well as the back doors of the main ball room. All exits are marked with Red Exit Signs throughout the hotel.

Alarm/Evacuation Procedures:
Our fire alarm makes a high-pitched sound. The elevators will not be in working order once the alarm is activated. If the alarm is activated, we recommend that you stay in your guestroom or in the meeting room. Our hotel staff will investigate right away the cause of the fire alarm. Our hotel staff will determine if it is a false alarm or if evacuation is necessary and will advise hotel guests accordingly.

If evacuation is necessary, every attempt will be made for a member of our staff to assist you in exiting the hotel. All hotel guests with visual impairments will be noted by the front desk, and special assistance would immediately be deployed to their hotel room or meeting rooms.

1. If you detect fire or smoke, notify the operator by dialing "0", or pull the nearest fire alarm manual pull station. There are three (3) manual pull stations and six (6) fire extinguishers located on each floor.
2. If you must leave the room, feel the door to see if it is hot. If it is not hot, open the door slightly to look and listen to determine if you can make it to the stairways. Stay low to the floor and take your room key.
3. Do not use the elevator. Proceed to the nearest stairway and exit on the ground floor.
4. If unable to exit your room because of fire or smoke: (a) Close the door and seal it with a wet towel (b) Stay near the window until help arrives.

We ask that our guests assemble in two areas based on exiting the hotel.
The guests exiting from the main entrance of the hotel, banquet rooms and West side stairwell exits, please assemble to the north/western corner of the parking lot (near the corner of Spring St. and Lakewood Blvd).

The guests exiting the outdoor pool exit, back of hotel and Eastern side stairwell exit, please assemble to the south/western corner of the parking lot (near satellite dish).

There will be a member of our staff at these locations to account for all guests and to inform our guests when it is safe to re-enter the hotel.
